Conferences

So far, TRR 174 organized two large conferences that greatly contributed to making the consortium known in the scientific community and to putting Germany on the map as a meeting location in the field of bacterial cell biology.

International Conference "Cell Biology of Prokaryotes"

In April 2019, TRR 174 organized its main conference, a 4.5-day international meeting on the “Cell Biology of Prokaryotes”, which took place at Banz Abbey (Bad Staffelstein, Germany) and was organized by a joint effort of all members of the consortium, including doctoral researchers, postdocs and PIs. It featured a line-up of 22 international speakers and two internal speakers that covered the whole breadth of the field, from cell biology over biological physics to synthetic biology. The program also included a number of short-talks and two long poster sessions, thus offering early-career researchers the chance to present their work to the scientific community. Ample time was also allotted to afternoon activities to facilitate informal discussions and networking. In total, this meeting attracted more than 180 participants that represented a considerable part of the international bacterial cell biology community. It thus reached its goal to present the research conducted within TRR 174 to a wide scientific audience and put Germany on the map as a conference location in the field of prokaroytic cell biology.

March 14-16, 2018
International Conference "Spatiotemporal Organization of Bacterial Cells"
Picture
In March 2018, TRR 174 held a 2.5-day conference on the “Spatiotemporal Organization of Bacterial Cells” in Marburg. This international conference focused on the molecular mechanisms that underlie the spatiotemporal organization of fundamental cellular processes in bacteria. It covered a wide range of topics, including
  • Cell division & morphogenesis
  • DNA organization & segregation
  • Positioning of cell surface structures
  • Assembly of large multi-protein complexes
The conference was largely organized by the Young Scientists Committee with support from the doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from the consortium, who selected and invited the speakers, worked out the conference program, designed the poster and flyers and coordinated the sessions on site. The program included talks by eight invited speakers as well as four PIs from TRR 174. In addition, a number of abstracts were selected for short talks, in large part given by early-career scientists. In a round-table session, early-career scientists had the chance to discuss scientific topics and techniques with established PIs in an informal setting. While initially planned as a smaller local event, the conference attracted more than 160 attendees from all over the world after its announcement had been shared on Twitter. Collectively, this meeting was highly successful and filled an important gap in the conference landscape at that time.

Moreover, TRR 174 co-organized and supported several additional conferences and symposia:
2019
Nov 24-28
Conference
“Bacterial Morphogenesis, Survival and Virulence: Regulation in 4D”
Cape Town, South Africa

This international conference covered a wide range of topics in bacterial cell biology. It focused on new scientific advances as well as on novel technologies and approaches to address current questions in the field.
Oct 7-11
Summer School
“Arnold Sommerfeld School:
The Physics of Life”
Munich, Germany

This summer school covered theoretical approaches to the analysis of complex biological systems, including topics such as morphogenesis, pattern formation, and optimization principles in biophysics and evolution. It offered interactive blackboard lectures and seminar style talks by internationally renowned scientists.
Sep 17
Young Investigator Symposium
“Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Bacterial Cells”
Marburg, Germany

At this international symposium, selected late-stage postdoctoral students were able to present and discuss their work with the scientific community in Marburg.
2018
Nov 11-13
Conference
“3rd VAAM Discussion Meeting on Microbial Cell Biology”
Rauischholzhausen, Germany

This international workshop provided a platform for the presentation and discussion of latest cell biological research.
2017
Sep 26
Young Investigator Symposium
“World of Microbiology”
Marburg, Germany

This international symposium covered new developments in the field of bacterial cell biology. It offered selected late-stage postdoctoral researchers the opportunity to present their work to the scientific community. In addition, the speakers were provided with information about funding opportunities for junior research groups in Germany that would allow them to establish their own group within TRR 174.
